What is a policy decline?

A policy decline is when a lender turns you down because your file does not fit their written product rules — not always because of bad credit.

Plain-English definition

Lenders do not only ask whether you can repay. They also ask whether the application fits their product rules — documentation type, ABN age, asset age, industry, income verification method, employment type, and loan size bands. When the answer is no on rules, that is a policy decline.

Examples of policy reasons

  • ABN or GST registration too recent for that product
  • Income documents the lender will not accept
  • Vehicle or equipment older than the lender’s matrix allows
  • Industry exclusion lists
  • Loan size below a minimum or above a specialist band
  • Employment or income type outside the scorecard

Policy decline vs bad credit vs serviceability

Bad credit / impairedConduct issues — arrears, defaults, judgments, repeated dishonours
ServiceabilityThe lender does not believe the repayment is sustainable on the evidence

What to do next

  1. 1

Get the decline reason in writing if you can

“Declined” alone is not enough to rematch well.

  2. 2

Check your credit file for errors

Fix bureau mistakes before the next application.

  3. 3

    Pause spray applications

Similar declines in a short window can harden the next assessment.

  4. 4

    Confirm purpose accurately

Personal vs genuine business use changes the product set.

  5. 5

    Rematch deliberately

Another policy, specialist tier, or ticket size may fit.

Frequently asked questions

What does policy decline mean?+
It means the lender’s written product rules did not fit your file, even if your credit conduct may still be acceptable.
Is a policy decline permanent?+
No. Another lender’s policy or a different product shape may fit. Fix the mismatch — documents, purpose, asset, or presentation — before you reapply.
Is a policy decline the same as bad credit?+
No. Bad credit usually means recent arrears, defaults, judgments, or similar conduct issues. Policy declines are about product fit.
What should I do after a policy decline?+
Ask for the reason, check your credit file for errors, pause spray applications, confirm purpose accurately, then rematch deliberately — often with a broker panel.
